In June 2005, Minister van Schalkwyk announced the designation of the first Environmental Management Inspectors in the country. These EMIs (also known as the Green Scorpions) were designated to monitor compliance with and enforce national environmental legislation.

On Thursday 16 August 2007 the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism will be designating 20 new EMIs (Green Scorpions) from South African National Parks employed in the Table Mountain National Park. The designation ceremony of these new EMIs will take place at the Wash Houses in Upper Vredehoek.
