TRADITIONAL LINE FISH AND HAKE HANDLINE VESSELS REQUIRED TO COMPLY WITH HAVING FUNCTIONAL VESSEL MONITORING SYSTEMS (VMS).

Right holders in the Traditional Line Fish and Hake Handline sectors are advised that the period for applying for an exemption from the required permit conditions to have functional Vessel Monitoring Systems on board vessels in these sectors closed on 16 April 2007.

As of Monday 23 April 2007 the Department intends to ensure compliance with the respective permit conditions that all vessels involved in these fisheries must have functional VMS installed AND reporting to the Department’s Operation Room.

Right holders who are unable to comply with these Permit Conditions are advised that they will not be allowed to engage in fishing unless:

• They carry on board the vessels proof of applying to the department for an exemption from the required permit conditions in a form of a letter signed by the Deputy Director: Resource Management (Marine) or
• They carry on board proof that they have purchased the VMS and that the service provider commits to fit the VMS within two weeks.
